Thursday Lunch Event: Campaign Financing

Campaign%20Cash%20300.JPGOn Thursday, the American Constitution Society and the BC Law Democrats welcome Margaret McCormick, campaign finance counsel to the National Education Association, to campus to discuss current campaign financing issues.  Campaign financing reaches the core of America’s democracy, raising concerns about speech, access, and our republican structure.  The Supreme Court will hear a First Amendment challenge to a provision of the McCain-Feingold Act on April 22 (the so-called “millionnaire exception”), which makes the event especially timely.  McCormick brings over 25 years of experience in campaign financing law and will highlight the most pressing issues of the day, including public financing. She also has a special tie to BC Law as the mother of JLSA President, Caitlin Vaughn.

Today: America's Failed Drug Policies (lunch, too)

jack%20cole%20cjlp.jpgToday the Criminal Justice Law Project, the ACLU, and ACS will host Jack Cole for a discussion about America’s drug war. Cole is the executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) and served for over two decades in the New Jersey police force, including twelve years undercover drug officer.  He will focus on burgeoning prison populations, unfair or racist policies, the loss of respect for police, and other consequences of current drug laws.
“This is Not a War on Drugs – it’s a War on People.”

The event will be at 12:30 in EW400. Wraps, wings, fruit and salad will be served!

Founded in 2002, LEAP is made up of current and former members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities who are speaking out about the failures of our existing drug policies. Those policies have failed, and continue to fail, to effectively address the problems of drug abuse, especially the problems of juvenile drug use, the problems of addiction, and the problems of crime caused by the existence of a criminal black market in drugs.
