Students begin to weigh in on Garvey replacement
And so it begins: students are weighing in on who they would like to see replace Garvey as the next Dean of Boston College Law School.
One student, Andrew Jones, created this picture (left) urging that Professor Bloom be chosen as the next Dean. Personally, I would love to see someone young, driven, and full of energy. I believe Professor Richard Albert fits that bill and think he would make an incredible Dean.
Who do you think should become the next Dean of Boston College Law School? Leave your comments below the fold!
UPDATED: More responses below from other students.
Dan Weinger (Federalist Society):
BC is going to greatly miss Dean Garvey. At a law school, it is important to have diverse points of view, and Dean Garvey always stood up for that, whether he agreed or not. Going forward, I am fearful that we will hire a less accepting dean than Dean Garvey, who though religious, made sure that any view could be aired at BC.
I wish him the best at CUA. I admit, however, that I am a little confused as to why he decided to make this move.
As far as future replacements, I would love for BC to look internally for the next dean, or find an alum. I don’t know if he wants the job, but it would be exciting to see Cassidy as the next dean.
Matt Mauntel (LSA):
I think this sounds like a great opportunity for Dean Garvey. He’s always had big plans for our school and I think he’s got great vision to lead a top university like Catholic. It was enjoyable working with the Dean this past year on the LSA and have appreciated his support for student interests. I wish him well and expect his continued success.
As for replacements, whoever is selected will be facing high expectations from faculty and students alike. Choosing Dean Garvey’s successor will be quite the task.
Gavin Bruce (ACS):
All in all, I hold nothing against the man – the opportunity to be President of Catholic U must have been quite the enticing offer. As for replacements, I think some students would like to see someone in-house, like Mike Cassidy, be considered for the position. Whether he wants to be Dean is another matter all-together. It’ll sure be interesting to see the short list the administration produces. Personally, I would be ecstatic if the law school would search for a Dean cast in the same mold as Father Drinan, but that may be asking for far too much.

BOOKSTORE GUY FOR DEAN: The annoying salesmanship we want. The child-molester beard we need.START THE MOVEMENT
Is the Albert suggestion a joke?
Paul, I am so dissapointed in you.
Scott Fitzgibbon for Dean
BC would be best served by looking to a proven entity from outside the law school. Let’s get some new blood in here that might be open to fresh ideas.
Coquilette obvi
haha. is paul a fan of richard?
i like richard too.but your post will cause some humorless people to hate him! beware.
and I would love to see Prof Liu as the dean (although this is highly unlikely, not because he’s not qualified but because he’s Asian)
Ring!!! This Catholic university needs a fresh perspective…from a Jewish woman. If Elena Kagan can do it for Harvard, Ring can for BCLS!
Prof. Albert’s fan writing again?
if Prof. Albert became dean then sushi and salmon sashimi would be made available in our cafeteria
katz
Why is Albert even a suggestion? He can’t run a class let alone a student body. Plus have you ever sat down with him at a formal dinner. I have. He refuses to eat. And when encouraged to he’ll just eat a piece of lettuce. That is really strange and I really don’t want my school being represented by a guy that can’t kick it with a beer and pizza.
Aslan.
CASSIDY, CASSIDY, CASSIDY.
Hillinger would whip the school into shape with zero bullshit
Vote for Change, Vote Bloom!
I think Professor Albert should be the new Dean. I mean, who else can match his phyical fitness and sushi-eating prowress? Protein shakes would be available on the cheap in the caf, and he can give his speeches in English, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Italian and Spanish. Simply a god among men.
how about prof. bilder? great scholar and very personable. i guess the unknown about her would be whether she has good administrative or fundraising skills; which cassidy does seem to have. either way, i hope they hire in-house this time around. lots of great talent here.
Gibraltar Str8t’s – LOL ….XDDDD
btw, we should not forget that after Prof. Katz, Prof. Albert seems to be the only one who has ties to oxford.
Anyone know if Elena Kagan is still available? I hear she did a great job at that school across the river.
anyone who can turn my degree into a job and not a regret….
Brown is well-published, intelligent, and will get things done. He’s also been around a lot longer than Albert.
Yes, Prof. Bilder will also be a good dean. There are simply so many talented people at our school. It’s time for BC to upgrade, pick someone with better credentials to be law school dean and hire new professors with better qualifications than a mere JD (regardless of they got it). As for irresponsible teachers like Gaxxia, we could simply wait for them to get replaced and eliminated from our system.
concur: I thought Garvey’s credentials were pretty good. HLS, Second Circuit clerkship, a stint in the SG’s office, where he argued before the Supreme Court — not too shabby! Bilder would be a good choice too, but credentials-wise, you’d be hard pressed to do better than Dean Garvey. And some of the recent hires have been great. Professor Olson, for example, is very well liked. And corporate people rave about Prof. Quinn. So lets give some credit where it is due.
WYLIE!!! BEST LADY EVER. CARES ABOUT THE STUDENTS AND THE SCHOOL!!!
Albert? is that a joke? Why not Mary Rose, her sweet and sassisness could help move us along in the rankings
Brown isn’t that personable… to be honest. I’m not saying he’s not a great teacher or scholar.I guess the above posters were not totally serious when they mentioned Albert because he’s simply so new and I would imagine him LOL’ing when he’s reading them. I do wish that he would become the dean one day.
Albert should maybe get some experience actually teaching before we elevate him to Dean, don’t you think? The new dean will almost certainly be from elsewhere. Cassidy would be the only possible choice from current faculty and it is likely he would serve in the interim unless he stays on his LOA next year.
Prof Liu … !!! he’s incredibly smart and personable.although he is not very dean-like
Effective leadership is not reflected in where one went to school or for whom one has clerked. Additionally, the skills required to be an effective teacher are not the same as those required to be an effective administrator. We need someone with vision and a no bullshit approach. Therefore all of this intellectual masturbation about someone’s "credentials" is missing the point.I agree with Chasing Paper – Hillinger for Dean! She runs one of the journals, so she understands how to get things done in an academic setting, is extremely approachable, and has a very clear vision of what she wants from people.
Fitzgibbon, Coquilette and Araujo S.J. all went to Oxford. Apparently Fitzgibbon always wears the rabbit fur hood at commencement.
Why hasn’t anyone suggested Yen? Not only is he one of the best professors around, but he wears fresh to death northface gear too. He offers BC law swag that no other could match.
fitzgibbon, for obviously reason, does not matter.coquilette did not study law at oxford.
bookstore guy for dean:the aggressive salesmanship we need to re-climb the US News rankings.
LLL, I support your support of my opinion. She is a perfect example of a person with truly excellent teaching skills and tenacious administrative drive who did NOT go to Oxford. I would also note that neither Garvey nor Fitzgibbon was pregnant and raising several children while in law school. Additionally, if Hillinger is not chosen as Dean, I would support her as a replacement for Gen. Stanley McChrystal.
As a recent grad, I just think it important that the new Dean only aspires to improve the school FOR ALL STUDENTS, not just 78%.
haha. Garvey was never pregnant. I guess he was responsible for raising his children too.
student = April Robinson
Dean West would bring fresh ideas to the table!
why did eagleI solicit quotes from those three idiots?
