Dean Garvey's official statement on his departure from BC Law

John H. Garvey

It is with truly mixed feelings that I write to inform you I have accepted an offer to become the next President of Catholic University.

It is certainly a wonderful opportunity for me. But this was a very difficult decision to make. I have loved my eleven years at Boston College, and I am so very thankful to have been able to lead one of the best law schools in the nation for over a decade. While I have been here, Boston College Law School has grown in many ways, and I have grown with it. I am proud of what we have accomplished together — the world-class faculty we have added to what was already one of the best groups of law professors in the country, the launch of our first-ever capital campaign, the rebirth of our alumni association, the establishment of our first LL.M. Program and of the Center for Human Rights, and the ever more impressive classes of remarkable students who pass through our doors each year.

But it is the relationships I have built that I will treasure most. You have all taught me a lot. I will miss my discussions with students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the energy in the classrooms and beyond, the collegial atmosphere that makes this law school such a special place. Boston College is unlike any other school I have been involved with in its focus on educating the whole person – mind, body, and soul. Our faculty, staff, and alumni’s mentoring relationships with students are unique, and their dedication is inspiring. I believe this is the best place in the nation for a student to learn what it means to be a great lawyer.

I will be assuming my duties at Catholic University next month. I will leave behind my fondest memories of our time together, and my warmest wishes for the continued success of the Law School.

Sincerely,

John Garvey
