Commencement Speaker Deja Vu
Say, didn’t we have a little bruja at this school last year over a certain commencement speaker? I mean what are the chances that a law school would invite that same train wreck controversey…oh…hello there our fellow ACC law school:
The selection of a former Bush administration official as commencement speaker at UNC Chapel Hill’s law school has sparked a furor.
Some faculty and students are criticizing the selection of Michael Mukasey, who served as U.S. attorney general from 2007 to this year.
A petition decrying the choice is circulating. It reads in part: “We believe a commencement speaker should reflect the collective values of the UNC Law community, including compliance with domestic law, international law and basic human rights. By refusing to condemn waterboarding as torture, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey has demonstrated that he does not represent those values.
But hey, I mean surely these guys watch the news and know that not everyone is a fan of the Mukase-meister right? Er…
“We did not know of the Boston College controversy at the time we invited Mr. Mukasey, but he was the nation’s top law enforcement officer, so who would be more relevant to speak at a law school graduation?”
Oh my dear legal Heel, you have no idea what you’re about to live through. For a preview, feel free to check out the Eagleionline Mukasey Archive!
Now remember Newtonites, no mocking until we hear who we have lined up this year.
