Course Evaluation Results

It has been almost a decade since the last Course Evaluations were produced by and made available to students.

In creating, compiling, analyzing and distributing these Course Evaluations, Eagleionline has had one primary purpose in mind: to satisfy genuine and longstanding student demand.

Still, it must be remembered that the usefulness of these evaluations is inherently limited. Although we installed some measures to help prevent ballot stuffing, we do not guarantee that those who ranked individual classes actually took those classes.

The only perfect way to guarantee this involves, among other things, getting class lists for every class at BC Law and assembling personally identifiable data from all individuals in those classes.

Although this is certainly doable, it is also a bit onerous, and at the end of the day, we really would rather you kept all your personal data.

Still, despite this survey’s inherent flaws, we hope that it will be at least slightly probative of students’ satisfaction with individual courses and professors.

We would like to give special thanks to Matt Yospin, Austin Evers and the many readers of Eagleionline.com who have helped make these evaluations possible.

I want to thank you all for putting the effort into doing this. I realize, that with everything else you had to do, that this was a great deal of effort. I and I am sure many others appreciate it.

Just a couple of comments/suggestions for the future. I would like to see questions that are a little bit more specific, for example, how many hours a week did the student spend studying for the class, was the professor responsive to questions, etc. These are the types of questions that I have seen in other professor evaluations, and I find them more helpful than blanket questions asking if the course or the professor is “good” or “hard.” Why is he or she hard, or good? Because of work demands? Because of the difficulty of the course material? Because he or she doesn’t explain the material clearly? I think that this would be more helpful. Also, more specific questions about the work load and the professor’s teaching would help avoid what I believe can boil down to a popularity contest; some students might put down that a professor is great because of a personality connection or preference that may have very little to do with the quality of the classroom lectures, etc.
But enough of the suggestions, you should be commended for getting this off the ground this year!
